On 18 September 2025, Professor Cecilia Chan successfully launched the Seminar Series on Assessment in the AI Era at The University of Hong Kong, drawing over 110 colleagues to the first session.

The opening seminar, "The Balancing Act of AI in Assessment – Ethics, Scenarios, and AI Literacy," explored the evolution of assessment from traditional practices to contemporary approaches shaped by generative AI. Professor Chan revisited the fundamental purposes of assessment, examined the alignment between intended outcomes and assessment design, and highlighted the urgent need to redefine assessment in response to AI-enabled learning environments.

She introduced the concept of "AI-giarism" – a rethinking of plagiarism in the AI era – and facilitated discussions on real-world assessment scenarios, encouraging educators to critically reflect on acceptable versus problematic AI use in their disciplines. Another key focus was rethinking the OBASL (Outcome-Based Approach to Student Learning) framework, with a stronger emphasis on feedback and reflection as core components of meaningful assessment.

Professor Chan expressed her appreciation for the lively engagement from attendees and extended an invitation to the upcoming seminars on 6 October and 3 November, which will continue to explore how assessment and feedback are being re-conceptualised in the age of AI.
