AI in Education Lab@HKU: Where Research Meets Transformation
Research and Redefine Education with us
We Are Visionaries
Welcome to the AI in Education Lab at the University of Hong Kong, a hub for exploring how artificial intelligence can transform education responsibly and meaningfully. Our mission is to empower educators, students, and institutions with innovative tools, evidence-based research, and actionable insights that address the challenges and opportunities AI brings to teaching, learning, and assessment.
Our research focuses on key areas such as advancing AI literacy, integrating AI into pedagogy and assessment, and examining critical issues like AI-related plagiarism ("AI-giarism"), AI guilt, and the perceptions of students and teachers toward generative AI in education. Through a strong foundation of published works and collaborations, we aim to lead the way in ensuring that AI is used ethically and effectively across all educational levels—from primary to post-secondary.
Beyond research, the Lab is dedicated to creating practical AI solutions tailored to educational development and research. We develop generative AI applications designed to enhance learning experiences, support assessment practices, and drive evidence-based educational innovation. These tools are crafted with a focus on accessibility, usability, and ethical implementation, ensuring they meet the diverse needs of educators and learners worldwide.

AI Literacy Frameworks and Instruments
Our AI in Education Lab is a leader in innovative research on AI literacy, which includes the development of the foundational AI Literacy Framework and the Dynamic AI Literacy Model (DAILM) for discipline-specific AI knowledge. Collaborating with industries, schools, and universities, we also develop tailored solutions for enhancing AI education and integrating it into various academic disciplines. Our hands-on courses and AI Literacy Awareness app empower educators and students to navigate AI responsibly and effectively. If you are interested in our programmes and resources, please contact us—we welcome industries and schools to engage and collaborate with us.

AI Policy and Guidelines in Education
Professor Chan is a global leader in AI policy for education, and has developed the AI Ecological Education Policy Framework which addresses the integration of AI into teaching and learning. Her framework has been adopted by numerous organisations and countries, including EDUCAUSE, the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) Cooperative for Educational Technologies, and the Moroccan government, to guide the responsible use of AI in education worldwide.
3
Voices of Students and Teachers in AI
Our team is dedicated to understanding and amplifying the perspectives of students and teachers on the integration of AI into teaching, learning, and assessment. Our work, including our book on AI in Education (Chan & Colloton, 2024), explores the benefits and challenges of AI, and how it impacts and influences key stakeholders including both learners and educators.
4
GAP - GenAI Assessment Project
The Global Generative AI Assessment Project (GAP) is a transformative initiative to reshape educational assessments on a global scale. Through collaboration, research, innovative practices, and resources such as seminars and case studies, GAP aims to enhance AI assessment literacy across all levels and disciplines to create meaningful, inclusive, and effective educational practices for the future. We invite educators, schools, industries, and institutions worldwide to join this impactful project to redefine how AI can be best integrated into assessments. Join us to be part of this transformative endeavour!

AI Technology and Development
Our lab focuses on developing innovative AI models using open-source large language models (LLMs) to transform education. Key projects include the SuperTA, an app designed to support educators with question generation for tests, quizzes, exams, and other assessment-related tasks. Additionally, our lab has also developed the AI Chatbot with Avatars app, which provides interactive, personalised learning experiences. These tools enable the enhancement of teaching and learning, fostering efficiency and customisation in education.

Exploring AI-giarism and AI Guilt
Our team has developed innovative surveys and instruments to explore critical issues in AI education, including AI-giarism and AI guilt. Our AI-giarism survey assesses attitudes toward AI-related plagiarism, highlighting the spectrum of behaviours and the need for clearer education and policies. The AI guilt survey identifies psychological impacts such as perceived laziness, fear of judgment, and authenticity concerns. These instrument have been adopted globally, and provide crucial insights to inform strategies for ethical and responsible AI use in education.

AI Courses for Teacher Professional Development
Our team, led by Professor Chan, develops professional development courses to help teachers integrate AI into teaching, learning, and assessment. Numerous schools and institutions have already adopted our AI literacy courses. Our upcoming STEAM-focused course, developed in partnership with industries and international organisations, offers hands-on training with subject-specific AI tools to foster innovative teaching practices.
